The Big Dig
The Big Dig
Boston MA made a major improvement in transportation through and within the city with the development of the Big Dig. This was the unofficial name given to the mega project which bypassed surface routes to create direct highway access below ground. The project took ten years for construction at a final cost of 14.6 Billion dollars. It is the most expensive highway project in US history. The 3.5 miles tunnel now runs from South Boston to just north of downtown in Charlestown. The beautiful Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge greets travelers as they emerge from the Big Dig tunnel travelling northbound.
The underground tunnel project was conceived in the 1970’s as a way to replace the elevated highway structure which was chronically congested with traffic. Planning for the Big Dig project officially began in 1982 and was managed by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. In 1987, a public works bill, initially vetoed by then President Ronald Reagan, was passed by US congress and created federal funding for the project.
The Big Dig tunnel has allowed the rerouting of Interstate 93 traffic through the heart of Boston, and also included the development of the Ted Williams tunnel to connect Downtown Boston to Logan International Airport via Interstate 90.
The project was not without its political, environment and engineering challenges. Tunnels needed to be dug through the downtown are which was largely landfill, and through existing subway lines, utility pipes and lines. These had to be moved or replaced. And there were even archaeological barriers, including glacial debris, house foundations, and even a number of sunken ships lying within the landfill which was reclaimed land. There were even concerns about rats which would have had their homes displaced and sent scurrying into local neighborhoods.
The completion of the Big Dig highway project is very important to the community of South Boston. It has eased traffic and changed access to and from the area, thus making it attractive for new residents and businesses who need improved personal and commercial transit.
The project has included development of parks areas in South Boston including the Four Point Channel and Harborwalk. Harborwalk is a great walkway for walking, sightseeing, fishing, or viewing the spectacular scenery of the Harbor and the downtown boston skyline.
