The city of Boston’s Department of Neighborhood Development has its mandate to make Boston a more livable city. It is working closely with local communities to improve housing opportunities and improvement of commercial property in these communities. The communities they are working in are: Allston/Brighton, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Mission Hill, Roxbury, South Boston, South End, West Roxbury and Downtown Boston.

The Boston Home Center is a service that offers a variety of programs related to home buying, renovation, repair, financing, and mortgage lending practices. This provides those are using the DND programs to improve the success of homeownership for low income home owners in South Boston and other communities served by DND.

The Boston Home Center offering classes and counselling related to credit repair and establishment, referrals to loan and grant home programs for purchasing or repairing properties, applications for new properties listed with the city, about local lenders and specialty mortgage programs, and information on predatory mortgage lending practices.

Home Buying 101 and Home Buying 102 are the courses offered to help homeowners manage their home or condo purchase by making sound property inspection, selection, negotiation, and legal decisions.

Grants and other financial assistance is available to participants such as down payment assistance of up to 3% on many mortgage types. Homebuyers can also receive a $300 discount on closing costs. The 1st home program is a program designed to assist with the purchase of new, rehabilitated, or resale homes and condominiums. To qualify for this program, you must be a low income earning, first home buyer, and have completed a certified homebuyer education class, possess sufficient finances to cover home downpayment and closing costs and have assets of $75,000.
