About BackBay MA

From Arlington Street to Massachusetts Avenue, to Columbus Avenue, an area called Back Bay is one of Boston’s most affluent communities. It was created during a backfill project at the turn of the 20th century. It is just south of the Charles River Conservation area on the Charles River. It is an official neighborhood of Boston and is best known as where wealthy and the upper middle class reside and for its shopping areas, hotels, and for its million dollar homes. Newbury Street is the Rodeo avenue of Boston.

The US 2000 census revealed a population of almost 27,000 residents in the Back Bay Beacon Hill area. Since the area only encompasses one square mile, its population is very dense. Median household income is $66,000 and the average home price value is $540,000. In 2005, there were 6 large commercial properties sold in Back Bay with a combined value of almost $200 million dollars.

Notable land structures in Back Bay are Fenway Park and the Prudential Tower. It is only a couple of miles from Downtown Boston. The Mass Pike runs directly through Back Bay. Most of Back Bay’s residential properties are large buildings housing one and two bedroom units. Most Boston condos are located in Back Bay.

Northeastern University and Boston University are close by with a combined enrollment of over 40,000 students. Other nearby Universities are University of Massachusetts-Boston, Suffolk University, and Emerson College.
